Category IV: Cross Cultural Capstone Course Options

A.  Capstone seminar:

ILS 401 Global Cultures Capstone (spring semesters)
LCA 615 Writing Travels (fall semester)

Alternatives to ILS capstone seminar:
Students may request approval, from the Director of the Global Cultures Certificate Program , to take a senior seminar or directed study substitute course to complete the capstone requirement.

To serve program requirements the seminar of directed study must contain the following: 1: substantial cross-cultural material, preferably between European and Non-European cultures: 2) a paper or project (18 pages minimum) covering cross-cultural comparison across borders; 3) submit copy of final paper or project to the Program Office.

B.  Cross Cultural Field work or independent study project abroad.

With proper approval, students may satisfy the capstone requirement through a cross-cultural field work project or through a cross-cultural independent study during a senior year abroad.

Students, who wish to complete the certificate capstone requirement abroad, must complete the following arrangements BEFORE leaving campus to study abroad: No belated requests will be considered once a student has left the campus.

  • Obtain permission from the Director of the Certificate Program
    • Provide a written proposal of one or more paragraphs detailing the field project or directed study. If directed study, provide the name of the UW-Madison faculty member who has agreed to supervise the paper.  If a field project, provide the name of the supervising faculty from the program consortium.
  • Inform the IAP advisor and the Certificate advisor of the Director's approval of your plan so action can be taken to provide the appropriate equivalency.
  • A copy of the final  summary or paper from the field project,  or the paper for the independent study must be given  to the Global Cultures Advisor upon your return to the States.
